If your receipt is a PDF from a supplier or a portal, the figures are already text inside the file. Nothing needs to read the image, because there is no image. The PDF to Excel converter pulls the columns out in your browser, free, with nothing uploaded, and you have a CSV in about as long as it takes to drag the file in.
If your receipt is a photograph — the thermal slip from a fuel station, the handwritten delivery note, a scan of anything — then the numbers exist only as pixels and something has to actually read them.
The photo route, honestly
Two steps, and the reason they are two steps is worth a paragraph.
- Clean the image — the scanner is above. Straighten the two degrees of tilt every handheld photo has, crop out the desk and your thumb, lift the contrast, and shrink four megabytes to about forty kilobytes. Free, in your browser, nothing uploaded. This step is not cosmetic: a faint thermal receipt read at an angle in bad light is where extraction quietly invents a plausible wrong total. It is the same tool as the document scanner page, put here because this is where the job starts.
- Read it with a model. This is the step that costs something, and the step where the document leaves your machine. That page says so before you use it rather than in a footer.
We separated them instead of shipping one button because the one-button version has to either lie about the second step or bury it. A free receipt scanner that sends your receipts to a model without saying so is not free — you are paying in documents.
Once you have rows
The output is columns: date, supplier, net, VAT, total. From there:
- The spreadsheet opens the CSV directly, no add-in, and understands VAT and GST columns.
- The VAT return summary takes a quarter of them and produces the ZATCA return box by box — and, more usefully, points at the rows whose VAT is not 15% of their net. That is where the afternoon actually goes.
- If what you needed was to issue a receipt rather than read one, the invoice maker makes a compliant one with the correct QR encoding, free and without a watermark.
Why the free tools stop where they do
Everything on this site that runs in your browser is free and stays free, because it costs us nothing per use. Everything that needs a model costs real money for every document, so it is metered, and the meter is visible.
That line is also the honest answer to why a shoebox of receipts is not a job for a browser tab. Thirty at a time works. A year of them is bulk import in the Fatoza app, which keeps the record afterwards — which is the part a tool that forgets everything when you close it can never do.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a single button that turns a photo of a receipt into a spreadsheet row?
Not a free one that is honest about it. Reading figures off a photograph needs a model, models run on servers, and servers cost money per document — so anything offering it free is either sending your receipts somewhere it has not told you about, or is a trial. Here the split is deliberate: cleaning the image is free and happens in your browser, and reading it costs metered credit and says so on its own page.
What if my receipt is already a PDF?
Then it is probably free and instant. A PDF emailed by a supplier or exported from a portal already contains its text, and the PDF-to-Excel tool pulls the table out in the browser with nothing uploaded. Only a PDF that is a scan — a photograph in a PDF wrapper — needs the model route.
How do I know whether my PDF has text or is a scan?
Open it and try to select a line of text with your cursor. If it highlights, there is a text layer and the free route works. If nothing selects, it is an image. Or just drop it into the PDF-to-Excel tool, which will tell you which one it is.
Does this store my receipts?
The scanner does not — it runs in your browser and keeps nothing after you close the tab. The AI analyzer necessarily sends the document to a model to be read, which its own page explains before you use it. Only the full Fatoza app keeps a record of anything, and only for accounts that asked it to.
How many receipts can I do at once?
Thirty pages or images per batch in the scanner. Past that it stops rather than running your phone out of memory. For a shoebox of a hundred receipts, the app's bulk import is the tool that is actually designed for the job.
