Why in the browser

Every other free PDF tool uploads your file to a server you know nothing about. For a holiday photo that is fine. For a signed contract, a salary certificate or a bank statement it is a decision you would not make deliberately.

This one runs entirely in the page. The file is opened, processed and saved locally; nothing is transmitted. You can confirm that by turning off your connection and using it anyway.

Merging does not redraw anything

Pages are copied between documents as the objects they already are, rather than re-rendered. Nothing re-typesets the text, so fonts, ligatures and Arabic shaping come out of a merge byte-identical to what went in. This is the difference between a merge tool and a “print to PDF” workflow, and it is why merging a bilingual invoice here does not quietly break the Arabic column the way a redrawing tool can.

Rotation is added to whatever the page already carried rather than replacing it, so a scan that arrived sideways and was corrected stays corrected.

Shrink is the lossy one

The other operations are lossless. Shrink is not, and it is worth knowing exactly what it trades before you use it: each page is re-rendered as a JPEG at 150 dpi and the PDF is rebuilt around the images. The page keeps its original dimensions, so it still prints at the right size.

What it costs is the text layer. A shrunk file can no longer be searched, selected, copied out of, or run through PDF to Excel — because there is no longer any text in it, only a picture of text.

For a scan, that costs nothing at all. There was never a text layer, the file is already images, and re-encoding them at a sane quality is usually where the ten megabytes go. For a digital invoice exported from an accounting system, it throws away the most useful thing in the file to save a few hundred kilobytes. The tool warns next to the button rather than in a footnote, and the quality slider is there because the right answer differs per document.

Limits

Files up to 100 MB each — the bytes are held in the tab’s memory twice over while a document is being assembled, so past that the browser gives up rather than the tool.

Password-protected PDFs are refused rather than half-opened. Open it in a reader, save an unlocked copy, and add that instead.
