“Free” in accounting software usually means one of four things, and only one of them is actually free.

The four kinds of free

Free up to a cap. Free until fifty invoices a month, or three users, or one branch. Fine for a consultant, useless for a retail counter that crosses the cap in a week.

Free, compliance extra. The ledger is free and the ZATCA Phase 2 module is a separate monthly line. This is the most common shape in Saudi Arabia right now, and it is worth noticing what it implies: you are being charged a subscription for the part the law forces you to have.

What to check before you commit

1. Is Phase 2 included? Not “supported” — included, at no extra charge, in the plan you are looking at.
2. Is there a cap? On invoices, users, branches, or items. Ask for the number, not the word “generous”.
3. How do you leave? If the export is a PDF report rather than your actual ledger, you are not leaving — you are re-typing. Fatoza stores everything in a local SQLite file you can copy, open and read without us.
4. Does it work offline? Half the shops in the Kingdom lose connectivity for an hour at some point in a month. If that means the till stops, it is not a till.
5. Is it bilingual? Arabic on the invoice is not optional, and an Arabic interface bolted on by machine translation is a support cost you will pay in staff confusion.
